Breaking the Cycle:of Depression

The Links Between Stress, Anxiety, Depression Stress, anxiety, and depression are interconnected mental health challenges that affect millions globally. Understanding the neural mechanisms behind these conditions provides insights into their development and potential treatments. Stress and Its Impact on the Brain Stress is the body's response to challenging or threatening situations. It activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to the release of cortisol, a stress hormone. Chronic stress results in prolonged cortisol exposure, which can damage neurons, particularly in the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for memory and emotion regulation. Key Neurons Affected by Stress: Hippocampal Neurons: Chronic stress can lead to hippocampal atrophy, reducing its volume and impairing cognitive functions. Prefrontal Cortex Neurons: This area, responsible for decision-making and social behavior, also shrinks under prolonged stress. Amygdala Neurons: Unlike the hippocampu...

Scientists Discover Hundreds of New Genetic Risk Factors for Depression

A Study  study , published in the journal Cell, found 700 variations in the genetic code of individuals linked to the development of depression, almost half of which had never been associated with the condition before. These small changes in DNA were linked to neurons in multiple brain regions, including areas that control emotion. A global study has identified 300 previously unknown genetic risk factors for depression because it included a much wider population sample. According to the World Health Organization,  3.8% of the population has depression  at any one time, affecting about 280 million people. While a range of factors including adverse life events, physical ill health and stress can increase the risk of developing depression, it also has a genetic component. This information was written by Anna Bawden from the Guardian and brought to you so my quest is to write more indepth information about the causes o depression and factors that cause depression
